Resolved Question: Ways to improve aquarium decor - how do I make this more interesting??????
I have a 10 gallon aquarium with 1 lyretail molly, 3 rasboras, and 2 white clouds. I'm following a stocking scheme I found in a book and am going for the Asian accent. The rasboras and white clouds are part of it, and I'm going to get 2 gold barbs and 1 or 2 dwarf gouramis. I have natural gravel, two pieces of drift wood, and 4 fake (natural looking) plants. Any ideas on how I could make this tank more interesting??!! I have some aquarium silicone, but am afraid to use it becasue of cleaning. How do you clean stuck-on things? Would you reccoment using the silicone to bind drift wood/rocks together to make a pretty decoration. Any other suggestions to make it unique (please nothing to gaudy - no neon colors). Should I add more plants to make it like a jungle? :) And any fish suggestions? I am a begginer aquarist so nothing tooooo hard please!! Thank you so much!!

Resolved Question: Tried everything to get rid of advanced fin rot and body ulcers... any ideas?
My betta fish has been going progressively downhill for 50 days now with fin rot and body ulcers. I've tried everything and just tried Maracyn Plus yesterday and she's gotten much worse. Her tail (caudal fin) has rotted off overnight, with bones sticking out. Her ulcers on her back are worse and she is much darker in coloring than I've ever seen. Sitting under her rock. Will still come up to eat if you go to her tank. With each of these medications she gets better for the first 2 days then levels off about the 3rd day, then begins getting worse until I switch medications. I know I may be over-medicating her, but each time I stop with the antibiotics, she gets MUCH worse. She's in a 2 gal tank with no filter. I do complete tank changes every 3rd day and partial water changes the other using bottled water from Meijer's. I've tried all these medications and some in combination. I worried that if I don't do something right tonight she will be past the point of no return by tomorrow. I hate to stress her out tonight by doing another full water change though. Any suggestions? I know that Maracyn Plus can't be used in combination with the other antibiotics but it seems to be making her worse. Tetracycline HCL Maracyn I Erythromycin Maracyn II Minocycline Maroxy Aquarium Salt Kanamycin Mardel Copper Safe Maracyn Plus I haven't tried using tap water... I will pick up some conditioner tomorrow and try that, thanks! Still don't know what to do tonight though. I don't know much about fish... I just got her last October and thought that ammonia and nitrites needed time to build up so I didn't think that was a concern ( since I'm changing the water each day). I know the frequent water changes and over-medication is probably most of her problem... I'm completely stressing her out... but I can't seem to break the cycle and get her off the antibiotics long enough to put her in a filtered tank where good bacteria can build up... Thanks Chrissi... wish I knew what the root of the problem was... it's really hard to watch her die. Her tank sits right in front of my computer and I've gotten attached to her over the last 8 months... so hoping to find something to help soon. Thanks Jason... that helps a lot! I will definitely switch to a 5 gallon cycled and filtered tank as soon as I can get her off the antibiotics and cycle one. Rotating her antibiotics does seem to be the only thing keeping her going this long, but still a downward trend... You mention methylene blue baths... can I just put the methylene blue IN her tank WITH the antibiotics? Will this have the same effect, and are they ok together? It's the transfers that she hates... and I have two identical 2gallon tanks now to limit the amount of transfers. Thank you SO much everyone! My fish has gotten worse, though, so now I'm struggling with euthanization . She?s hiding under her rock, and each time I look in she tries to hide further, moving kind of spastically. I have the clove oil and vodka all ready but can?t bring myself to do it.

Resolved Question: Should I start a saltwater aquarium in my 30 gallon?
I have a 30 gallon freshwater right now. One of my favourite fish died and now I am thinking of starting a saltwater tank. I have always loved and wanted a saltwater tank. I have just heard that they are very time-consuming and expensive. From the people who have them, is this completely true? If so, how much time and money? I love SW fish. Freshwater fish just aren't as exotic as I like. Tetras and goldfish are boring to me. I know that I can get anything from shrimp and snails to lionfish in a SW tank (not in my 30, of course). I hate to be cliché and it has nothing to do with Finding Nemo, but I love clownfish, both the orange and the black ones. I also love anemoenes [sic]. my ideal tank would be a live rock with anemoenes [sic] and clownfish. I can also put other things in there, maybe, but I will have to learn what is compatable. I can't think of anything more rewarding than a beautiful SW tank that I can watch and show others. I don't wanna have to spend $50 a month on one but I can maintain it. Only from people who have or had a SW tank, what all do I need to set up and maintain a tank of that size? Could I get a rough estimate on how much each item I would need is. I have tried looking it up but there are so many different sites saying different things. There is only 1 pet shop that carries SW fish and I just went the other day. I haven't heard too much info from others, other than "its expensive and its really hard and takes a lot of time." On a side note, I am a full-time student and I do not work. I am usually home most of the week since class is only Monday and Wednesday morning and Tuesday nights. I do live close to Panama City Beach. I like snorkeling. I usually go around the jetties at St. Andrew's and see some beautiful fish. Has anyone ever caught something and put it in their SW tank? Does it work? I wouldn't mind grabbing an urchin (carefully) or a small tropical fish. On the same note, I LOVE jellyfish! One of GOD's coolest animals, to me. Small jellies are common near PCB. Has anyone ever had jellies in their tank? Would that even work? I would love to have a few very small jellyfish inside of a tank with some other creatures that can live with them. Any advice would be perfect. Just do me a favour and stick to the questions. I hate it when people critique my choice of fish. If it can't work, it can't. Thank you, in advance. *best answer gets 10 points, if you care about that stuff*

Resolved Question: Tadpole advice! Please help?
I have 15 tadpoles. I put them in a 1-2 gallon, round, glass fish bowl. There is no filter, but I clean it twice a week. I keep them on my kitchen counter. I feed them frog and tadpole pellets. I use clean water (not tap, i have a filter under my sink). There is sand and rocks that i got out of a pond, at the bottom of the bowl. I put a lot of moss, algae, and water grass stuff in the tank. There are three mosquito fish that share the tank with them. I feed the the mosquito fish bread because they like it. I have a stick floating at the top of the tank for when the tadpoles turn into frogs. I want to know if I'm doing anything wrong, or dangerous to the fish. I want to buy them an aquarium but I only want to spend thirty bucks on them. Every aquarium I've seen is over fifty. Any suggestions? Concerns?

  • Substrate: Material used on the aquarium bottom. Ex.amples include gravel, sand, etc.
  • Ammonia tower: A biological filtration system which consists of a plastic chamber with a biological filtration media. Water runs through the media, which mix.es with the air, and reacts with the bacteria which serve to remove ammonia and nitrites. It is this wet / dry ex.change that promotes bacterial growth. Most commonly referred to as a wet/dry filter.
