Voting Question: What should i do for a lid? I got a betta fish, Kwop Kilawtley, and he has a big tank, but it had no lid, and i need a lid because i have two cats, what should i do for a lid? and here are some other questions i have about betta's (siamese fighting fish for those who dont know...) 1) How much should i feed him? i have the little betta fish pellets, and the pet store guy said he gave them three a day, but when i feed Kwop Kilawtley he eats it fast and looks around for more? 2) What kind of container is best? i have "The Betta kit" it has a tiny box-like aquarium, is trhat good? 3) what temperture should it be at? trhe water in the tank is a mix of tap water and water from my dads fish tank, is that good enough? or should it be just room temp tap water with the betta conditioner in it? 4) rocks? the containers the petstore keeps betta's in are just jars with water, should i put rocks and plants in with Kwop Kilawtley or just leave him in it alone, cuz he looks empty and alone without anything else. 5) He just sits at the bottom most of the day, until i come into the room and sit with him, then he starts doign laps, but other ppl with betta's say theres sits in teh middle, not at the bottom, is this okay or is my fish sick?? 6) Would bigger rocks, or smaller gem-like rocks be better for Kwop Kilawtley's tank? becuase i have alot, so would a mix be good? or would one be better than the other? Resolved Question: DIRTY betta water help please? How can i get my betta tank not to get so dirty?? it gets dirty/foggy like 1-2 days after i change it, its a one gallon, i have the pink aquarium gravel rocks at the bottom and 2 plastic plants in it, but my friend has a betta in a 1 1/2 gallon tank with the pink rocks and one plant and a column decoration, and she doesnt change her water but about once a month because hers stays like crystal clear all the time! we both have male bettas, is it my fish that is making it so dirty? i dont think i am over feeding it, please help!!! i put tap water with the drops in it, but it did not come with a dropper, just a cap, and i fill the cap halfway and put it in there, is that too much? my friend has the drop kind and puts 2-3 drops, am i putting too much of that that is causing the foggyness/dirtyness? it also gets like this white clear stuff at the bottom of the tank as well after about 2 days? Resolved Question: I fear my goldfish is having Hole in the head disease? Hello, I am addressing this question especially to goldfish keepers. I have three lion heads goldfish in a 250L aquarium. I religiously siphon the bottom of the tank and perform 20-30% water changes. I?ve checked, all the water parameters are OK. Today, when I was feeding the fish, I noticed a small white spot on the head of one of my goldfish. It?s not white spot disease; I know how to identify white spot disease. There is only one round white spot on the head of the goldfish. I fear it?s the hole in the head disease. I have only added salt and I have not added any chemicals yet in the water. In the country I reside, we don?t have an array of fish medicine like in European countries. I currently have the following medicines in my kit for treating sick fish: Melafix, Esha 2000, Exit, Azoo which is a combination of different chemicals effective against Ulcer, Ick and bacterial infection, Iodine, Methylene Blue, Hydrogen Peroxide and Potassium Permanganate. Unfortunately we don?t have medicated food here, so I will have to rely on chemicals added to water. I don?t want to lose this fish to any disease and any advice on what should I do is most welcomed. Resolved Question: why doesnt my spotted puffer eat? so i got everything i need for a puffer and its not eating all it does is lay on the bottom of the aquarium.I did what it said put 1 t spoon in 5g water and feed it fish flakes like at walmart and why is there so much dead fish in walmart? Resolved Question: Tips on a fancy goldfish tank? I just bought 2 fancy fantail goldfish last week. I have tried my luck with beta and they all died, so I decided to try a different type of fish. They are in a 1 gal tank, that has been decolonized, aged, with aquarium salt. I feed them about 3 granules once a day. From all the research I have done, I think I need a bigger tank, about 10 gal. I did not use the gravel on the bottom, because I have read that it can hurt the fish with they are grabbing it and spitting it out. Instead I used the oval marble like stones on the bottom. Other than getting a bigger tank, what are some things I should do to keep my fish healthy? Okay, I got the fact that the tank isnt big enough, and I am buying a bigger one tomorrow. I have the lights, all the water testing strips, I am testing the water 2 xs daily, since the tank is to small. I spent almost an hour asking questions at the pet store before bringing them home, so I tried to do my research. I also have been online for about 3 hours tonight, to make sure I am doing everything right. I am more wondering if I should have gravel instead of the marble like rocks? Is it safe to have the figurines in the bottom of the tank? Do goldfish need real plants? I am not an animal abuser, I am just more used to dogs, but my new hubby is alergic, so if I am going to have any pets, they have to be fish. Please help, not criticize. Resolved Question: Need advice for a very sick goldfish? he always sits at the bottom? I took a couple photos so u can see what he looks like.....ignore the other blurry fishes as I used a slow shutter speed with no flash so only bubbles who is sitting still looks ok. There's 2 small regular goldfishes and 3 white cloud mountain fishes with him in the tank. http://www.flickr.com/photos/42653520@N08/4077911580/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/42653520@N08/4077915048/in/photostream/ I'v asked local pet shops and some say use aquarium salt and others say no don't use salt just feed him crushed peas. I tried hand feeding him crushed peas and still no luck(he does spit out most of the peas when I take out my hand), instead hes getting dark marks on his scales. What else can I try? I always have to hand feed him flakes now as the others always beat him to it and also he cant float so he struggles to go up to the surface to eat. Voting Question: Are 3 corys too much for a 10 gal with 8 flame tetra's? I started my tank at Christmas and have 8 flame tetra's currently doing just fine in there. I have been looking for something for bottom feeding since then and have come across 2 corys I like, I saw a pepper cory at 1 store last week and now after finding pictures online, the julii cory on sale at my local aquarium store, kinda looks the same to me. I know most fish are better in pairs at least. But I have read the Julii does well in 3+ but better in 6+. I was only planning to get 1 to start last week, but now after reading the info I have gotten now, can I put 3 together in my tank or will it be too much? Right now I am adding water due to evaporation every few days, but changing the water 25% every week. I have flake food and granual, but the tetra's don't seem to be able to fit the grans very well and miss about half given. I know corys can eat pretty much anything, but if the grans are for colour enhancing are they still okay to use for corys or should I get something different? This is what Wiki has to say about the active time. I thought I remembered reading they weren't nocturnal. Where investigated Corydoras sp. have been shown to be diurnal and crepuscular rather than nocturnal and activity can even peak at twilight.[9] Corydoras are very good choices for a community aquarium, Voting Question: what kind of fish will eat brown algae? and live in peace with my african dwarf frogs and betta? i have a ten gallon tank with lots of sea shells and a live rock. i feed the betta flakes (making sure none sink to the bottom) and the frogs pellets (some of them get lost in the gravel because my frogs are grossly messy eaters. also, the pellets are suposed to make them shed more, and i happen to own the only two ADFs in history that DON'T eat their skins) about twice a week, and i drop a small cube of frozen brine shrimp into the water about twice a week. i know that the brine shrimp are really messy and its impossible for me to control the amount of wasted food, and i know that's why i have so much brown algae. i have to clean the tank twice a week because it grows on the sides of the tank, in the gravel, and on the shells and rock. its really gross looking, and i would like to find a fish to help with the clean up. i know that i can buy an aquarium vacuum, but i live in a dorm and that would be way too much hassle (just cleaning the tank out is a pain in the you know what) so, what should i buy? Resolved Question: Why is my betta not eating and lethargic? My betta fish is always at the bottom of her aquarium and now he always like on his side too. He never comes to the surface anymore so I can't feed him! He hasn't even in a while I don't know what to do! He looks fine though he's really colorful and no bulgy eyes, overblown belly, discoloration, etc. Although he used to have fin rot, it's better now he doesn't have it anymore. He lives in a 3 gallon tank with 2 heaters (which don't seem to work real great cause the temps like 76 now and sometimes 72 when its cold..) What's wrong with him? How do i get him to eat? Should i get a filter or something do those help Resolved Question: I want a Violet/Dragon Goby? Here in a few months I'm planning to set up an Aquarium for a violet/dragon goby. I know they need clean brackish water between 75 and 80 degrees, and that they might grow over 2 feet, they are peaceful, don't eat small fish, and that they love algae, blood worms and brine shrimp. What i need to know is what size tank should I get for it. I know it should be longer than tall, but how many gallons. Would 25-30 gal. be fine? Also what are some good tank mates. I read that fast moving fish aren't a good tank mate because the eat the food before the goby can get to it. But what about a small syodontis, a small bottom feeding catfish. It's mainly nocturnal, so it feeds at a different time than the goby, but I don't know if it will survive the brackish water. Are there any other fish, amphibians, snails or crustaceans that i can keep with it? I re-checked my source and it turns out 2 foot long dragon gobies are rare in captivity. Most likely he'll only get to about 15 inches. P.S. Acquiring a large enough tank, filter and air pump is no issue. Nor is the price. Resolved Question: how long after adding fish to aquarium can you feed them? ok so, i bought 2 white mountain clouds, one betta, 2 zebra danios, a golden algae eater and 2 albino (something something) and the guy at the store told me to put in a food tablet so i did and one of the zebra danios eats it and fights off anyone who gets near it? i tried other pellet foods put they just kinda fall to the bottom what can i do? is this normal? Resolved Question: how do i keep my algae eater from dying? i have 5 goldfish in my aquarium and i know they are known to eat a ton. whenever i feed my fish they ear whatever is floating in the top and then spend the next 10 minutes scanning the bottom for any food. they're like vaccum cleaners! my algae eater doesn't have enough to eat so i bought thsese special "algae disks" they sink straight away and they dissolve slowly. the algae eater is supposed to suck on them but my goldfish are eating those too! what can i do? Resolved Question: Betta fish illness or just torn fins? I got a double-tail betta from Petco about three weeks ago, along with a betta starter kit (1/2 gallon bowl, gravel, silk plant, water conditioner and Hikari Betta Bio Gold). When I put him in his new home I noticed what i thought was only a deformation in his upper caudal lobe, it looked like an indentation along the upper edge. He was very active and friendly, he would get excited whenever I came near the bowl and had a huge appetite. Within the first week I switched him to a 2.5 gallon glass bowl with a small heater and also added a small castle that I thought he couldn't get inside of. I do a third of the water water change in the middle of the week and a full water change at the end/beginning of the week. And only feed 2-3 pellets twice a day, he eats all the pellets in a matter of seconds =). Roughly a week and a half ago I had to go out of town on short notice, right before a full water change. He would have been able to hold over til I came back (Fri.-Sun night) but while I was gone my roommate had gotten a goldfish that was getting beat up by the other goldfish she had. So she decided to put the goldfish in with my betta all weekend (I'm told they got along fine) without changing the water, which as I stated was already in need of it. When I came back I changed the water right away and asked if we could put the gold fish in my betta's old bowl until we could find someone with a more suitable home for it. The next day, I noticed that Rocco's, my betta, fins were starting to fray, only on the upper caudal, and appeared to be what looked to me like they were, for lack of a better word, melting. It seemed like fin rot to me, so I started treating him with Maracyn-2 and a little aquarium salt. At the end of the 5 week treatment he seemed much better, but I still wasn't sure if it was fin rot or just torn fins because I saw him coming out of the castle one day. Thinking it might just be torn fins I removed the castle and treated with only salt for about three days. This was a BAD idea his fin tearing'' had progressed to tears on his lower caudal lobe and his anal fin, these are quite severe. Going back to the fin rot idea I changed the water and began treatment with Maracyn-2 and aquarium salt again only this time i removed the plant in case that was the cause of the 'ripped' fins . This is what I am currently doing, it is the second day of treatment. PS. his appetite is still good, he is 'active', but likes to hang out at the bottom of the bowl swimming to one side then tightly turning towards the glass and going in the other direction. could this be a swim bladder infection or just a new habit? he never used to do this before the weekend I went away. I have already taken the castle and the plant out. and i didn't put the goldfish in with him. my room mate did when i was gone for the weekend. ok so I keep getting people telling me not to put the goldfish in the bowl(which DOES have a heater with the temp 78-82 degrees) with the betta. which makes me think im not being clear. I was not aware of the fact that my roomate had put the goldfish in the bowl with my betta until i came back from the weekend. I am aware that bettas attack other fish and also that goldfish are extremely dirty. this is why i asked to separate the two fish. Also, I am going to school for veterinary technology, i know about animals. please stop treating me as though i am ignorant and know thing about them. grant it im not too familiar with fish, but i have been doing a lot of research about what is going on with rocco. my research has brought me to two conclusions 1. he has fin rot or 2. he has torn fins. I am simply asking for other peoples opinions on the matter so that i can treat him accordingly. I did research about bettas. which is why he has a heater and i do regular water changes. when i do the full water changes i re-acclimate him to the temperature by keeping him is some of the old water in a bag and then floating him in the new water. And i have stated that i don't know that much about fish, that is why i am asking for help in diagnosing him. As far as the harsh conditions, i am doing my best to deal with the after math of my roomate's stupidity. Thank you for your criticism, but that was not my question. In fact the criticism was not at all neccasary because i was aware of the things that could affect my bettas health and which is why i plainly stated them. the fact that i do change the water, he has a heater, the possible (and likely) contaimintion from the goldfish, the plant and the castle. The only thing i asked for was people's opinions on what they thought was wrong with my fish, not what was wrong with the way i keep my fish. Voting Question: i need help for my oscar ASAP!!!? i have two oscars in my 75 gallon tank. they were getting along fine for a very long time, i've had them for 2 years. About 3 months ago one of them started building a nest of some sort. picking up rocks and moving them, she cleaned out a whole side of the tank and then she started to beat up the other one. i tried to separate them in the tank and i know you will criticize me for not buying a new tank by now but i just cant afford it. i went on vaccation and my brother in law took care of them. now and he has a hole in his side where she has bitten him really bad and a white fungus is growing where the hole is and i can see his muscle. i have now put a plastice separator in so they can not get to each other and i am saving so soon i will buy them a new tank so they can be seperate and comfy if he makes it through this. i put fungus medicine in, stress coat, water purifier, and freshwater aquarium salt in after doing a water change but i want to know if there is anything else i can do for him to make it so he survices. i tried feeding him and he wouldnt eat but he is moving around and not just laying on the bottom. thank you for any help and please dont scold me because i am only 17 and doing the best i can right now for the fish, i literally put just about 3/4 of my paycheck into taking care of them each week between water supplies, a balanced diet, and tank supplies and i just want him to survive. thank you. Resolved Question: Goldfish is sick and needs help? I bought my goldfish and a snail a week ago and immediately that day I put it in an aquarium I set up that same day. I realize this wasn't a smart decision but its to late to fix that. My goldfish developed a disease which i self diagnosed as ick. Im quite sure that's what it was so I went to the store and began the treatment with "Ick Clear" made by jungle. The second day (after I applied treatment) my fish had fuzzy patches on his head and back and his fin was roting (clearly because part of his fin was only lines where there used to be skin?.). And it wasn't so clear but it looked like he was developing red patches scattered around his body mostly near his fins. So frantic and desperate I bought "Lifeguard All-In-One Treatment" made by Tetra. Today the third day of treatment for ick (and second for lifeguard) his ick spots seem to be residing but the roting fin is still continuing now he also seems to be developing small black patches around his body. And he is loosing a few scales here and there when he swims (when i feed him). Please help I love my little guy! PS he has been on the bottom of the tank ever since ick began. PS: He still eats everytime I feed him. Oh and the same day I added life gaurd I moved my snail into a smaller tank and then added aquarium salt. Would this hurt the snail if i put him back? Resolved Question: Saltwater Aquarium: Fuzzy Dwarf Lionfish? Sorry that i keep asking these questions so much, but i keep getting different answers from everyone, and from my LFS. i have a FOWLR tank set up with almost thirty pounds of live rock, most of the tank is wide open, just half the bottom is covered with many available hiding places. So far i have a Blue Hippo Tang who is about 1" or maybe a little over. I want to get a seahorse, he is adult size, and i really want a fuzzy dwarf lionfish he is about 2 inches or 2 1/2 AT MOST. i know they can extend their jaws and eat almost anything, but i will be feeding sinking pellets, live brine shrimp, frozen krill, freeze dried shrimp brine, and veggies once daily or two if needed. Will i be able to keep a fuzzy dwarf lionfish? What are the chances of him eating my fish if he even tries when i turn the aquarium light off at night since they are nocturnal? the books i read said that it can be kept in a community tank or its own species tank with one male and several females...please tell me if you HAVE or HAD experience with keep dwarfs in a community tank, not if you have only read or heard, i want to hear it from an experienced keeper please Resolved Question: Follow up: What other fish sicknesses look like ich? This is a follow up question to my other one I asked a while back... After 30 mins of chasing my only black molly with this problem... This is the best picture I can conjure. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a35/psychoninja911/IMG00008.jpg See the white clump behind the eye? He has 2 more on the other side on the base of his dorsal fin. I know this looks like a lot but it's just a lot of spacing. I find spacing easier to read. __________________ A little more detail than before. - I got aquarium salt. - I'm NOT running carbon filters as I am treating ich. - The infection does stick out and is not flat with the skin. - The infects have never been any other color - other than white. - Common growth spots are close to gills, base of fins, and beside eyes (ouch). - A million times I must have read don't pour pet store water in your tank - yes I did anyways when I received my fish (won't do it again after this - I swear). - I have several other platy/molly, 2 plecos, and cory fish that are NOT infected. - It's a 90 gallon tank. - No life plants at the moment. Plecos feed on zucchinis. - I do not have a quarantine tank. - Heater was on but hot weather is already returning to Texas... I turned it off. Tank carelessly made it to 88 degrees when I turned it off (this morning). Tank is at 83 at the moment. - No tank algae. - My PH, ammonia, and nitrate? levels all came back today from the pet store. They told me everything was balanced. I have the actual paper still I think. - Aside from treatment, recent tank changes include breeder grass (placed at bottom of my tank), and carbon filters were removed to treat the ich. But I don't think this stress would do much to the fish. -The black mollys get no more than 3 or 4 spots on them at one time. On that note they're small (smaller than the platys). Only about an inch and a half long. - I've been using ichaway. Is this product okay? Does it even work? After this molly loses the infection, I'm almost sure another molly will pick it up. And the black mollys swimming behavior/tank areas is not really different from the other live-bearing fish. They all do about the same things. School of black mollys hang around the school of redwags and sunsets. I've been examining my other fish very well. ONLY the black mollys are getting it. If it were visible, I'd have noticed it by now. IS IT POSSIBLE--- You guys told me the cluster things on my fish aren't the actual ich. It's like a sore type thing that builds up from the fish. Is it possible the ich is gone and these are still bubbling up on my fish? PS. the mollys are NOT rubbing on the rocks. I had ich (or so I thought) before in a previous tank and this was the typical behavior - before I treated it. The problem, then, was solved. This disease looks exactly like the ich I thought I had before. I'm going to the pet store tomorrow night - I'll probably read this several times in between now and then. Thanks much I know that when I get over this, a great sense of victory will overwhelm me!!! (But not without your help of course) Resolved Question: whats going on with my betta fish? I think he might be sick but im not sure with what. I got him on thursday and as soon as i put him in the bowl i noticed how he had some dark outlines on his head around his scales, at first this worried me but then i thought maybe thats just how he is. But nope, as these days keep passing by, they get darker he acts differently, and now he had white scales under his mouth. He keeps going to the bottom of the tank now, and he goes in this little plastic rock hut thing. Sometime he hides behind the filter. I dont have a heater because my parents refuse on getting one. We dont have a thermometer that i can use to check his aquarium temp. His tank is 1.5 gallons, and once again my parents refuse in getting me a bigger tank since we already paid about 40 dollars just for this fish. They think its rediculous so they dont want to bother buying n e thing else, only another fish if it dies. So what am i supposed to do? and is he sick? I honestly think hes going to die soon but i just hope not. Oh and when he lays at the bottom of the tank i put my hand gently in front of him from the outside of the tank and then he moves but then he quickly goes to the top of the tank and gets some air. and while i was changing his tank i noticed a lot of white fluffy clearish things floating around i quickly removed them though. I feed him 4-6 pellets at least usually once or twice every 1-2 days. If theres anything else you guys want to kno ill be keeping a watch on this so just ask me away. I really just want my fish to survive. Yeah, cuz there aquariums are supposed to be 75 - 80 degrees i think, and i kno for shur its like off temp. To "The Z" I do in fact have a filter, and as i said above "he hides behind his FILTER" and i use topfin water conditioner i put about 4 drops in his tank i changed his water today because there was some weird green ball with white fluff around it on the plastic rock, and i think he needed it too. and from what "The z" is saying it doesnt seem like you really read what i was saying.... unless i worded it wrong... but alright?! Im not shur what type of filter it is, it came with the tank. Its pretty small though Resolved Question: Algae in Tropical Fish Aquarium.? I've had a fish aquarium for a year or so now, but I've had trouble keeping my fish alive for more than a few months. Is this just the way fish are? They are smaller tropical fish that I bought at a local PetSmart. I've also had a problem with algae growing in the bottom of the tank, on top of the rocks. How can I fix this? I've started feeding them less, thinking that they weren't eating all there food and the uneaten food was causing the algae. But it is still there. So how much, and how often should I feed them? I also notice one fish stays beside the heater a lot, is he just naturally cold or is the water cold... so what temperature should the water be? Basically any tips you have to keep the tank clean and prolong the life of the fish would be greatly appreciated! :) THANKS! -The tank is 10 gallons. -I'm not sure what the current temperature is. There is a heater for the tank. If i had to take a guess it feels around 77-81 -There are 4 tetra's and 2 mickey house platy's. All are smaller than 1 inch. -There are rocks, three fake plants, and a small house for them to hide in. -I'm not sure about the filter. -There is not a lot of sun around it. There is a light for the tank, it is on around 10 hours a day I think. -We change the water once every month/month and a half. 1/3 of the water is taken out and replaced with dechlorinated water. The temperature is not adjusted completely with the tank water, but it is very close. Resolved Question: My aquarium has a high casualty rate. Why? I set up a 20-gallon aquarium in May this year. I started off with 3 tiger barbs, 2 hi-fin red-eyed swordtails, 2 albino corydoras, 2 red-cross tetras and 2 golden rosy barbs. Within a week, the 2 albino corydoras (suspected poisoning? due to inflamed, red gills) and 1 red-cross tetra died (it's stomach was cut open so I assumed it was attacked by another fish). A week later I added 2 albino sharks and 2 red-cross tetras. They all did fine for over a month. Then one morning I woke up and one of the golden rosy barbs was bleeding (one the left side by the fins). I isolated the fish for awhile in another tank and treated the wound with medication. When I put the fish back in the tank, the other fish attacked it until it sank to the bottom of the tank. A few days later, I woke up and one of the hi-fin red-eyed swordtails has died; it had already turned white and was hidden under an aquarium plant. A few days later, I noticed that one of the red-cross tetras has its scales coming off and its tail and fins nipped. I isolated that fish in another tank and treated it with medication thinking it had some fungus/fin rot and it died two days later. Just then my last golden rosy barb had its tail nipped (by the tiger barbs?); it survived though, and the tail has just grown back. Thursday afternoon last week I bought 2 more additional tiger barbs after reading from a website that their minimum number in a tank should be at least five in order not to be violent to other fish. I also added 2 scissortail rasboras. However, the following day, one of the scissortail rasboras died, finding it at the bottom of the tank. Then on Sunday morning, I find one of my albino sharks dead. Its belly was bluish-blackish and when I took it out of the tank, it smelled really really bad. Today I get home and find my last red-eyed swordtail dead, but it didn't turn white like the other one did. I have already cleaned out the tank, the filter and changed the water and added water conditioner in it. I feed the fish twice a day. I've been to many fish shops and consulted the people about this matter and one said that it's the tiger barbs who's killing the other fish. Also, I only get my fish from two fish stores and both always tell me that my fish are compatible with each other (or maybe they just say that just to earn money from me). I don't know what's wrong. Either my fish aren't really compatible with each other or I introduced fish too soon. This is only my second aquarium. My first aquarium was only a 5-gallon one and I took care of 3 neon tetras without any problems for almost two years (until my 6-year-old niece decided to dip her hand into it and killed two of them). Later on I had 3 red platys and they got along fine with the remaining neon tetra (the person I gave them away to said one of the platys got pregnant twice already). What am I doing wrong? I'm about to give up!!!! I'm ready to get rid of the tiger barbs and go back to caring for neon tetras and platys. Resolved Question: What's wrong with my betta fish? I bought a betta fish 4 days ago. He's a blue crowntail and quite spunky. He lives in a 10 gallon filtered tank (it causes some current but he doesn't seem to mind) and has water changes of about 5 pints daily. The water is at room temperature. I originally tried feeding him pellets but he wouldn't eat them so now I feed him freeze dried bloodworms every other day. There is a plant and a black mystery snail (introduced yesterday to help clean up some of the uneaten pellets that sunk to the bottom) that shares his home. He has a brown spot on the top of his head but I'm not completely sure if it's new or if it's natural. My concern comes here. I found what seems to be some of his skin or scales (it's clear with black) floating at the top of his aquarium. He acts the same as he did before but it seems odd that this would happen. Is it just the stress of moving into a new home or is it something serious? haha false alarm, the "scales" seem to be just a little bit of the gel from the plant that I must have missed (although this still doesn't explain the brown spot). I'm not sure it's septicemia seeing as there's been no loss in apetite (in fact, there's been a gain). Yes, the tank was cycled and it already has a filter. I have a some gravel and the plant isn't too sharp although he does like to hide between the leaves... Thanks for the advice but I think I'm just going to wait a couple days to see what happens. Since he refused to eat the pellets for four days, it's probably just stress. Resolved Question: Why is my female Molly so aggressive? I am new to fish keeping, and I am helping my little brother with his new aquarium. He has two hi fin tetras and two female mollies. The aggressive Molly is orange and the other one is a dalmation Molly. The orange one is constantly picking on the other fish. At first I thought she was being territorial because she would nip at any of the fish that swam by, but now she actually chases them anywhere she is in the tank and another fish is near. The orange Molly also seems hungry ALL THE TIME and is very aggresive during feeding time. She is especially aggressive to the dalmation Molly all the time. I feel really bad for her because she just lays around the bottom of the tank now and shows no interest in food either. What do I need to do? Would adding a male Molly help the situation? Resolved Question: My Betta is staying at the bottom of the tank? Ok, so i've had my betta fish for about 1 1/2 weeks, he's in a cycled tank, with filter, but no heater. Yesterday he was swimming around as happy as larry, but today, he's just at the bottom of the tank, he's fins look crimpled, and not as flowy as they were yesterday. I feed him in the morning and night, 2 granules each time. He is is usually really active, every time i come in the room, off he goes, whizzing around the tank, and when i open the lid to feed him, up he comes, staring at my finger putting the granules in the tank. But today when i opened the lid he didn't budge. I've got him in another smaller tank, with is normal aquarium water, and he's become more active, right now he's swimming slowly to the top, then down he sinks again. Could it be bladder disease? I read, that You take out out 50% off there water, and put new water in, then not feed them for 2 days, after 2 days, put a pea without the husk on it cut into littl bite size peices in the tank. Is this right? I can tell he wants to swim around, and he's trying too, but he can't. Please help! I love my little buddy, and i don't want to lose him. You don't understand, i can tell he's not relaxing, he leaning to the side a little bit Resolved Question: My goldfish is gasping for breath and it's tail is split! Diagnosis?!? Okay, so my shmancy fancy goldfish lives in an aquarium with Koi and janitor fish. While I was feeding the fish, i saw my poor fishy gasping like the human equivalent of running a marathon. It's tail was split and looked nibbled on (which is sad, since the tail was like a little dress). It's propping itself at the bottom of the tank near the filter and away from the others seem to enjoy poking at it's tail. It can still swim a little, but not that much. It usually just swims a few inches, then retreats after the koi go in it's way. Should I seperate the tank so it will heal without disturbance? The fishes have been living together in peace until a few months ago, when a similar goldfish got chewed to death. What should I do to let my goldfish heal? Will it survive? And what should I do to stop this from happening to my other fish? i need all the help i can get. Resolved Question: Green Spotted Puffer is Dieing? My family recently bought a GSP from Wal Mart. We cannot tell the difference between the fresh water version and the brackish. We've kept the fish in a brackish tank for now. Since our family is lower middle class we don't have enough time or money to go out and buy fancy things to take care of the tank for us. (Please, we are not making up excuses, something that is $60 is totally out of our price range... Even $40-50) The puffer did get stuck to the filter once because he was so curious about it (my guess since he was staring at the filter as if trying to figure it out when we first put him in there). I don't know what CAUSED him to get stuck to the filter because its pretty impossible to do so for the puffer since he is so large, but he managed to do so. Since then he hasn't been his usual happy self. He switches constantly from happily swimming around the tank one day to laying on the bottom. He has two black spots(or lines rather) on the side/belly area that were not there before. We have been feeding him dried shrimp. We bought snails for him to eat, but he refused to eat them and instead ignored their presence. Its been a few days since his collision with the filter and he is starting to lay on the bottom much more frequently. I found him curled up on the side of the tank on a seed pod plant that we have. My mother says that he will be fine. I think otherwise but I would like to have a second opinion. About our tank. Changes that we will be making (on pay day) will be marked by a * : 1. It is a 10gal tank. *We will be upgrading to a 20gal long since it is only $34. 2. We followed the tablespoon (Mother handled the salt part) to every 5 gal ratio. Not wanting to KILL our other fish we put in one tablespoon Aquarium-Marine salt and have slowly added a few pieces of salt here and there. 3. We have SEVERAL bottom feeders and tank cleaners so I don't think the pH or nitrate levels are the problem. The tank is completely spotless with little to no decaying material. We could be wrong though. 4. We have 1 plecostomus, algae feeders, the 2 snails that the puffer refused to eat, 1 danio, and the green spotted puffer. 5. We feed the puffer the only food we have - the dried shrimp. *We will be buying him blood worms and I'm trying to find a place that sells ghost shrimp to feed him. If push comes to shove we'll go to a bait store and get meaty foods for him there. 6. We have about 3 plants in the tank as well as a coral skeleton which all the fish besides the danio like to hide under. *We will buy more plants and things to hide in for the puffer and plecostomus when we get the 20gal long tank. 7. The tank temperature ranges from 76-80 F. When all of our family goes to be the last one family member to go to sleep turns off the tank. The tank NEVER gets below 74 and NEVER above 80. That'sts the most that I can say about the tank since we don't have any tools to measure anything with... We're going to talk to some people at pet smart as well so we are not limiting ourselves to what people on the internet say. I am pushing hard to keep this fish alive because I wish to take it to college with me. Resolved Question: Why are my goldfish resting on the tank floor? I have 6 goldfish and a white cloud minnow in my fish tank. Ive noticed that for the last few months they will go and rest at the bottom of the fish tank untill I disturb them by going near to the tank or turning the light on/off. Before anyone suggests it, the tank is big enough for them. I have had a look over them and there is no clear sign of disease (finrot, fungal infection, white spot etc) The only problem I have had is abit of fin nipping but when I noticed this I put some aquarium salt in the tank and then a few days later some anti fin rot - fungus medicine in to prevent the fin from becoming poorly. They are feeding normally (practically snatching the food from my hand lol) and the water is clear and clean as I have a good filter. The PH level is normal and there is an air stone going so there is plenty of oxygen. Are they just resting or is there a problem I need to be aware of? When there not resting they seem feisty enough? I have two fancys, a common, a comet and 2 black moores. Yes I do partial water changes every week. The tank is big enough but Im not very good with gallons or litres or whatever, its about 3 meters across, 2 meters up and 2 meters back. I havent tested the nitrates or amonia levels, I think I will give that a shot. Thier diet is good I think, I give them a range of foods, flakes, sinking pellets, for some reason they love catfish pellets, and occasionally they get treats like peeled garden peas and cooked, peeled and chopped prawns. But like I said, thier appetites are more than good lol. My oldest fish is about 18 months old and my youngest about 9 months old. I think im def going to test the nitrates as alot of people seem to say that it could be a big problem. Resolved Question: Do you see any problems with my fish tank set up? Okay so i think i'm finally done with my fish aquarium.... It is 40 gallons and has small/medium sized pebbles on the floor (about 3 from the floor up). There are many big sized rocks along the floor as well as 2 fake plants. I have 2 stress relievers going and an Aqua Clear 50 filter. I have a marineland 200 watt heater as well. Inside the tank i have: 3x snails 2x platys 2x turquois rainbow fish 2x ghost catfish 4x cory catfish 6x true rummynose tetras 7x harlequin rasbora I'm feeding them flake food and i'm thinking about picking up bottom pellets or dried worms tommorrow. The only potential problem i can see is that i read that ghost catfish should be kept in schools but i only have 2. is 2 enough? And the snails/cory catfishes are bottom feeders...can they maintain without me having to buy food that drops to the ground? Other than that, do you see any other problems with my tank? I also have a neon light above the tank. Voting Question: Is My Small Dalmation Molly Injured? Well, I started a new aquarium a week ago and I bought 3 Mollies. One Black one and the other 2 were Dalmation Mollies. I have a heated, filtered, cycled 5 gallon tank. I noticed that my black molly thinks that she owns the tank and she is aggressive when it's feeding time. She always pushed around my smallest molly while feeding and she was even pecking at her! I was gone for the weekend and my parents feed my fish and when I got back, my Smallest Molly swims side to side like Shimmy or whatever you call it and stays at the bottom of the tank. I took her out of the tank today and right now she is in a cup and I will soon buy a small tank for her. She isn't showing any other signs of diseases. Is she injured or very stressed? Will she recover? The tank temp stays at 78 degreese and I always add 1 Teaspoon of Aquarium Salt per gallon because Mollies enjoy salt. So, will she get better? Should I add her back to the tank when she grows and is better? Resolved Question: what to feed my fry fish? hello all i was wondering what kinds of food i could feed my fry i have guppy and molly fry i currently feed them tetra color tropical flakes these fry are in a 10 gallon bare bottom tank with an aerator , filter and heater with aquarium salt if there is any food or anything i could do to try to accelerate their growth please let me know thanks. havent had a problem at all with the filter but thanks for the heads up Voting Question: My Betta Fish Is Sinking, Gills Bushed Out? My fish has 5 gallon tank with a filter. (his water temp is 78 degrees) This is the 2nd time that my fish has had this problem. He was perfectly normal, until I fed him a pellet. (I feed him 1 pellet a day and a freeze-dried bloodworm every few days) When I fed him the pellet, his gills bushed out, and stayed out. A little while later, he started to lieing on the bottom, sideways, on his back, and a bunch of other ways. Every once in a while he'll get a very sudden burst of energy and dart around his aquarium, running into the glass until he reaches the top, gets a breath of air, and then stops what he's doing and he just sinks headlong to the bottom. I put him in a 1/2 - 1 gallon jar so he can swim up and down to get air. I tried feeding him a pea, but he hasn't ate it yet. (Last time this happened, I put him in a jar, then fed him a pea, and a few days later he was alright.) Resolved Question: Fish Not Growing Maybe Not? Im not quite sure if my fish are growing some I know are fully grown and some are not. My two bolivian rams don't seem to be growing as with my bristle nose pleco over the 2-3 months we have had them the pleco has increased in all dimensions by not alot, but by enough to notice and question it. My bolivians maybe 0.5-1 cm in length. I feed my fish so that they can eat whatever in 2-3 minutes. My ammonia is 0 and my nitrites are at 0 the tank has been cycled for about 5 months now. I don't have a nitrate test kit but I do change the water ever week and I have 4 plants. The aquarium is a 45 gallon one and has 2 platys, 2 bolivian, 2 guppies, 4 neons ( 2 died I cant and don't have time to catch them with my study they are sick but my other fish haven't been affected for some 4 months) 1 kuhli and a bristle nose. ( I know odd stocking dont ask). Oh and there is not chance in hell that Im going to buy special pellets for my bottom fish it costs 18 per packetand that would last about 2 weeks where I live. The bolivians are both males is the dominant releasing growth reduction hormones? What could it be? One more question If I remove the platies and neons will I be able to get 6 congos and one centre fish but which one? Sorry about spelling and punctuation but I dont give a damn after having my nose in a study book for 4 hours. Resolved Question: how can i keep my betta fish warm? My betta lives in a 2.5 gallon bowl with a Hydor 15 watt mini aquarium heater but I am having troubles keeping him warm. For the past two weeks he has been laying at the bottom of the tank with his fins clumped and hasn't been eating. Earlier this week I went out and bought a Marineland 10 Watt Shatter Proof heater that promises to heat to 78 degrees. I hooked it up and when I went to bed it was working fine, but when I woke up the next morning my bowl was back down to 60 degrees. For the remainder of the week I had both heaters running and still the highest I could get the bowl up to was 70 degrees. I even have my betta's bowl wrapped up in a blanket trying to keep the heat in but it doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions? More Info: My betta is about 5 months old and is not displaying any signs of illness. I keep his bowl clean and have various things for him to swim in and around. He gets fed Betta Bites pellets on a regular basis and freeze dried blood-warms as a special treat. I make sure to never over feed and never leave old food in the bowl. The fish store gave me Betta Revive, but I only used it once because honestly, I'm not clear on how it's supposed to help. My house heat is set to 65 degrees. It's comfortable for me and I don't have money to blow on a gas bill. My fish is next to an interior wall away from windows. Also I have recently hooked up an airstone in the tank. He has shown no change. Resolved Question: General questions about Betta fish? I am hoping to get a betta fish within the next few weeks. I've done tons of research, spent hours upon hours reading about bettas, but have never got a definite answer as to what size of a covered aquarium would be best. The link below, I am thinking about getting the medium one. Do you think that will be big enough? Or should I just get the large one? http://www.petco.com/product/12031/Lee-s-Deluxe-Plastic-Aquarium-With-Lid.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch Also, what do you feed your Bettas? I've read to and not to feed bloodworms. Are they gross? Can I use faucet water (we have a well, not city water) instead of distilled water? Is a male or female Betta better? Which should I get? What are good names? What type of decorations should I put in the tank? Should I use marbles, pebbles or fake gravel in the bottom? Thank you SO much! Resolved Question: Goldfish have no energy? My goldfish are very.. I would say lazy. I have 2 of them, 1 is a comet goldfish, and the other is hard to tell, he's still small so I can't tell if he's a comet or a common goldfish. They are in a 2.4 gallon aquarium, with 2 plants and a little house/cave thing, as well as two 5 gallon filters, and air stone, and an ammonia/nitrite absorbing pouch. I am planning on moving them to my grandfather's pond soon, but first I want to make sure that they're healthy. They are still very small, and I've had them for a little over a year, I was just wondering if their growth was stunted because of the small aquarium. I know this is likely the case. There is also a small zebra snail in the tank. For the last about 8 months they have been sitting at the bottom left corner of their tank, beside the filter, and they just sit side by side, and hardly move. Sometimes they'll wander and nibble at the rocks, and they follow eachother around when they do move around. But they don't even get excited for feeding time any more (they do eat, but they don't get excited). I was just wondering, are they sick? Or depressed? Or just lazy? They seem otherwise fine (no obvious physical differences) but they are just lazy lazy lazy. I am moving them to my grandfather's pond, but not until spring, since he has to get it ready for fish first, and then it will be winter, so probably not until April. They won't die before that, don't worry. I take very good care of them, except for the tank size issue. I have been trying to convince my parents to let me get a bigger tank but they won't have it, that's why i'm getting rid of them. Also, they tend to panic when I turn on the light beside their tank. Actually, only the comet panics, he'll swim around frantically for about 30 seconds and then calm down. The other one doesn't seem bothered by it. My fish are still very small, only about an inch, my friend got some fish at the same time as me, from the same tank, and she said her fish are still the same size too! She has 5 fish in a 72 gallon aquarium. Could the fish's growth have been stunted before we got them? The fish do have room to swim around, they just choose not too, sometimes one of them will wander off and go exploring, although there's not much to explore, and the other one will follow right behind. Resolved Question: May I have some advice on prolonging my Fantail Goldfish Life? 1) I have a 10gallon tank with a Tetra filter advertised to handle 2-10gallon tank, I have air pump said to be good for 5gallon tanks, I have split the tube in three (using a splitter) and have 3 streams of bubbles coming up from the gravel. 2) I have a half-inch to an inch-in a half gravel on the bottom with a few marbles. 3) I had the aquarium run with the filter on constantly for a month before I got these fish (as I did not turn it off when my other fish died a month ago) 4) I have changed the carbon-foam filter bag before a day before getting the fish. I know that with this filter, the good bacteria goes with the cartridge, but I was told that a layer is made at the bottom of the gravel. 5) I got an inch long fantail goldfish, and another inch-in-a-half fantail at the same time and released them into the aquarium (after they adjusted to the temperature) 6) temperature is at 70, PH is 7.6 (or a little higher maybe), ammonia levels are at 0, the water was conditioned with chlorine and chloramine neutralizer, and cycle was put in. 30% water change was made beforehand (water was taken out while cleaning the gravel). Problem: the fish are either going to the surface for air or seem to be sucking on all the gravel or the ornaments in the tank. Going up and down against the glass. One of my fish now has a little white puss on one of his gills, but it was primarily the going to the surface that bothered me as my other fish did get swimbladder disease from gulping too much air. I figure it is an oxygen problem as the ammonia is non-existent, but there are a lot of bubbles and a lot of water surface movement. Do goldfish go up thinking they'll get food? They seem to stop the going up behaviour for a bit after a feeding. They are not fed that much (maybe 4 sinking pellets, soaked first, a day each). - The intructions for the fungus killer I have says I have to remove the filter, and it makes a cloud of yellow dust, should I use it or should I introduce salt gradually? Thank you in advance for identifying my problem. Resolved Question: Are there natural methods to manage a goldfish tank? Hi there! Before I go into my story and dilemma, I'd like to apologise in advance! At the start of September this year we bought our daughter a goldfish tank for her 5th birthday. For 2 years in a row she's asked for one! So we decided that perhaps at 5 (with a little help from us) she could start learning responsibility for caring for an animal. As novices, it was a rocky start. We lost some fish, in quick succession. Had white spot - don't know if it was from a new fish or from stress caused by incorrect filter cleaning or water change. And we made 'all' the classic mistakes! - Even though we read up on it and followed so called 'professional' advice from 3 different pet shops! On the bright side, we managed to stabilise the tank. At one point we had very high levels of ammonia (tested by an aquarium shop) - the pH levels were consistently on target. We were advised by them to keep as much of the natural bacteria in the tank as possible! (e.g. DON'T wash the filter in tap water and only change about 10% of the water!) We've now had about 2 months of wonderful goldfish bliss. Well, until now. We have 3 goldfish (2 regular orange ones and a fan tail) and late in the afternoon 2 days ago we noticed the fan tail one seemed to have quite an arch in his body and seemed to just lay around at the bottom of the tank. At that time he still seemed interested in food and would swim up to the top of the water for it (I remember he had breakfast!). But during the next day (yesterday) he started looking for places to hide and his tummy looked bigger and he seemed to like laying on his side. But his body didn't seem to be as arched. At this point I separated him from the rest of the fish into his own little tub with some of the tank's water. That morning (yesterday, and before separating the fan tail) I checked the pH level - was OK. I also changed about 10% of the tank water, vacuumed the base of the tank (and the gravel) and I rinsed the filter out in some of the removed tank water. I then put everything back together and periodically observed the fish (the fain tail too) throughout the day. By evening he seemed to be a little more 'active' and because I figured the tank had settled again by this time, I re-introduced him to the 2 other fish - back into the tank. This morning he seemed distressed again. So I called the local pet shop. After describing all this and the symptoms, they said that he may have picked up an infection or he might have 'banana bendy' (or 'banana' something)! Anyway, they recommended I buy a 'broad spectrum' medication for fish aquariums and once again separate the fan tail and apply this according to the instructions on the bottle. Now I've done this (about 4 hours ago) and he's still breathing, but is still on his side and looking lethargic. The tank's environment is like this... it is about 30 liters capacity, has 3 fish in it (small to medium size - each fish about 1" or 1˝" long", there is one live plant (sorry I don't know its name), there is also a fake/plastic plant, it has about an 1" of gravel, a small stone to weigh down the live plant, there is also a small bell and a filter which also aerates the water (we run it on a timer for periods of 12 hours a day). The stone, bell and fake plants were all washed, boiled and cooled before introducing them to the tank. The stone came from our garden outside. Normally we feed them each day, but only enough so after about 2mins there is no food on top of the water - about a medium size pinch. Having said this, I've cut back the feeding to the same amount every 2nd day. I feel I've done all that I can. And as I have searched the net, I am now also feeling a little confused! I read somewhere that gold fish like to eat the inners of peas (not the skin/shell). And apparently other veggies! Is this true? And I am also mindful of the chemicals going into the tank. Does anyone know of an effective/good natural method to manage a goldfish tank's environment? Another article also mentioned salts or Epsom salts to manage ammonia and nitrates? Can someone explain this 'clearly'? In simple terms? Thanks to everyone and anyone who is willing to a) take the time to read this, and b) share their knowledge! Thanks, mardanvi3. :-) Resolved Question: Dirty betta tank help? Resolved Question: How do i give the best possible care to my comet goldfish? I know that i asked this question before but the answers weren't that good so i am asking it again. I have a small comet goldfish and i want it to live for a very long time. I've owned goldfish all my life but they never lived past 2 years old. Here is some info about my fish: 1- He lives by himself in a fishbowl. I know that he should live in a tank but my other fish lives in it and he kills other fish. On the bottom of the bowl is aquarium rocks. I clean it every time it gets too dirty. 2- I only feed him once a day. The fish food brand is called "Wardley's Essentials Goldfish Flakes". I only feed him a tiny bit each day. Here are some questions i have: - Should i get him a friend? - How can i keep him healthy all his life? - How often should i clean the bowl? I am going to clean the tank soon so how should i clean it? I know that you should empty a little bit at a time but how do you do that? Do you have to take the fish out first? Any other fish care info would be great and please only answer seriously? I REALLY want him to live a long time. Thanks. I REALLY want to let him live in my 10 gallon tank but my chinese algae eater lives in it and if i put my goldfish in it then he would die because chinese algae eaters kill other fish! If i didn't own the chinese algae eater he would be living in the tank. Selling the chinese algae eater or the goldfish is NOT an option! Is there any way that i can let my chinese algae eater and my comet goldfish live happily together or is there are way to build a homemade tank for my goldfish because i don't have the money to buy another one? Resolved Question: shoud l still buy them? i have a 55 g aquarium wit an 8-9" needlefish(the dwarf one[10" max]) a 4.5" senegal bichir and a 4" severum, i would like to add a green terror and/or jack dempsey, or see which 1 of them wins first and return the winner to the store as they are both the exact same size( i saw them in the store already about 2"), i know severums are peaceful cichlids but mine really isnt last time i bought a GT he got along with it and if the smaller GT nipped him which was only ONE TIME, the severum would chase it back and the GT never foughtt it back as the severum was 3x bigger than him but the gt is now gone my NF attacked it all of a sudden as i stopped feeding him(didnt eat it), so my concern here is my severum also killed an oscar in the past, but it looks like as if my severum only harms fish that look like him such as my 3.5" male convict he would get chased non stop, HOWEVER my smaller firemouth always remained untouched by my severum, and barely got chased by it when eating time. they told me JDs are more of a territorial species meaning they will usually go straight to the bottom and take over a cave only which i doubt my severum will let it do that.. the sev even attacked my pleco and the jd and or gt im buying is gonna be at least 3x smaller than the severum, and i doubt my severum will attack them as he is pretty peaceful towards fish that dont look like him and is only aggressive to them if 1 of them tries to take over him which im 99% it wont happen is like saying a smaller GT beating up a bigger texas cichlid, so i just want some answers not criticizm... i switched the pleco to senegal bichir as it seemed like the pleco was getting more harmed by my severum/ other cichlids which are now in different tanks. currently the bichir lives in the 55 and no1 has ever harrased him including my convict/GT/F/Sev to the point of ripped fins, etc. EXCEPT my gourami he is a psycho Voting Question: Is this regular goldfish behavior? I recently acquired 3 rather large goldfish from a friend. Each of them about 8 inches in size. they are in a 55 gallon aquarium. I do make sure to feed them well and make sure they all eat. But i noticed that even after eating they will suck on the rocks at the bottom of the tank. It almost looks like the eat the rock then spit it back out. This is my first time owning goldfish since i usually tend to own fish such as Bala Sharks and cichlids. If this is normal behavior, why do they do this? Resolved Question: How can I stop the other fish from eating a catfish's food? I have a bottom feeding catfish for my aquarium. I feed him algae wafers but he never gets to eat them because the other fish are going crazy over them. He is kinda skiddish so when the other fish are bombarding the wafers like that he won't come and eat them. Answers? Resolved Question: Keeping veggies from floating... what's the trick? lol? So I have been feeding my fish/snails fresh cucumbers and they love them but there always floating. I know they sell the little clips with the suction cups but I live in a small town and haven't had a chance to get any so until I do, any tips on how to weight down the cucumber slices with something that will not hurt my fish but will keep the snacks at the bottom of the aquarium? Thanks! Voting Question: I think my fish has swim bladder disease and I don't know if I've done the right things to get it better, help? Today I noticed that my goldfish seems to be a lot less energetic then normal. It's swimming at the top of the tank and when it tries to swim down to the bottom it looks like it's being pulled to the surface tail end first. I've already cleaned the tank, and replaced 1/3 of the water with fresh water.I have also tried feeding it a bit of a mashed up pea. I have one other goldfish and it seems to be swimming very frantically, is it just stressed because of the my other fishes illness? Also I don't know if my fishes eye's have always been this way, but one of it's eyes (the sick one) is orange around the pupil and the other eye is white (like the rest of the fish) around the pupil, is this a warning sign of some kind? I just put the fish back into their aquarium a few minutes ago and they seem a little less stressed out, however the sick one still seems to just be 'floating' around, although not as bad as before. I'm also taking a family trip tomorrow for 2-3 days and I have a friend taking care of house, what should I tell him about my fish? Thanks!!! Resolved Question: My Guppies keep dying!!!!? I have a fairly small aquarium it holds about 15 litres. i bought two guppies a while ago and they were fine for about two days and then one of them began floating on its side and soon it was dead.the next day the other one died too.i got them both replaced but i got them at another pet shop . they were fine for about 4 days and then the same thing hapened. i researched on the internet and found a thing called swim bladder disease and it sounded like how my fish were (one of them couldnt swim down without floating back up and the others just stayed at the bottom of the tank) and it said to feed it to them peas but it was too late because they wouldnt eat anything!!i dont want tokeep losing my guppies. i have an airstone and im getting a filter soon .i have a chlorine neutraliser and i have heard about nitrates and ammonia. is there a neutralizer for the nitrites and ammonia ?? i do 20% water changes every 3 days.. my water temperature stays between 23 to 26 degrees C. . Resolved Question: Whats wrong with my Siamese fighting fish? Hi, My siamese fighting fish (lorraine) has really bad fin rot. Last week i went to the pet store to get something for it and they recommended Bettafix. For the last 7 days, i've been adding it to his water. He won't eat and when he does (try to) he can't even get the food in his mouth. He's become so sluggish, with very little energy whatsoever. Before i'd go up to him and try feed him and he'd be all energetic and jumpy now...he won't even swim up 2 the top of his tank to eat and when he does he tries to leap towards the food (he either just bumps it or misses it completely) then floats on his side and swims to the bottom of his tank. I've changed his water today and am going to stop adding the Bettafix as it seems to be doing him more harm than good. I have started putting aquarium salt in it though. Is there any other way of curing his fin rot without making him so sick. I'll be changing his water weekly from now on, but cani do any more than this? Resolved Question: guppy just gave birth to one fry? our guppy just gave birth to one fry a day or so ago. will there be more soon and when can we release her into the tank with all the other fish the mummy guppy and fry are in a breeder similar to this http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/askville/4048118_8917834_mywrite/aquarium_fish_breeder_net.jpg except our one has a separate pocket down the bottom which the fry can escape into. also can you just feed the fry the big fish food too?? Thank you!!! :) Resolved Question: Something is wrong with my Oranda goldfish? I just bought a Oranda gold fish, I do not know how old it it is but it is about 3" in the body. It will swim to the bottom of the tank usually a corner and just stay there head first in the gravel? it will come out once and a white and will eat when feed. I noticed one of the gills was red and inflamed so I have introduced medication. It has now been two days and the gill looks back to normal but the hanging out in the corner head in the gravel has not stopped. I have a tank 10G starter tank running aquarium salt I tested the water is and it is Good according to the fish store I have the pump running, but the filter is out as per the medication. It will be replaced in two more days I have also added a bubble maker since buying the tank i hope this is enough info, any help would be great. thanks, I was told 1 inch per gallon? The medication "API FURAN-2 (anti-bacterial fish medication) Resolved Question: Why are my nitrates high but not ammonia or pH in my goldfish tank? Help fast!? I have a goldfish tank. No heater, no plants. Have kept goldfish for years without any problems just like this. All of a sudden, one died and another got red blotches and everyone hung out at the bottom the tank. My ammonia and nitrates were high; pH was okay - would have liked higher because they're goldfish but it was neutral. So I have done 40% water changes for almost 3 days now. My ammonia and pH are perfect but the nitrates are very high. The latest water change of an hour ago shows my nitrates are way off the chart again. I've tested the water from my tap and it is fine. I've not done any feeding as per other answers. Cleaned the gravel with my gravity vacuum. Added my usual water conditioners (Stress-Zyme, Ammo-Lock, Stress-Coat) with all of the water added back into the aquarium. Cleaned the only rock I've had in all of my tanks over the years. Put in a new filter cartridge. Cleaned the whole filter/motor. I've never had anything like this happen to me before in my over 20 years of having fish and goldfish. I have had the same routine for years and have even kept some of the goldfish until 5+ years of age. What's going on now? I don't want to lose anybody else. Thanks in advance for your answers. I need to know what to do for NOW - not in the future - to get the nitrates down. Resolved Question: What are some basic needs for my new Betta Fish? Okay, so for my birthday on saturday my dad took me to go get a betta fish. i've had them before but they died, one drowned when i went away for the weekend and the other had some desease. and i would really like Kwop Kilawtley to live for a long time, so i have som,e questions: 1) How much should i feed him? i have the little betta fish pellets, and the pet store guy said he gave them three a day, but when i feed Kwop Kilawtley he eats it fast and looks around for more? 2) What kind of container is best? i have "The Betta kit" it has a tiny box-like aquarium, is trhat good? 3) what temperture should it be at? trhe water in the tank is a mix of tap water and water from my dads fish tank, is that good enough? or should it be just room temp tap water with the betta conditioner in it? 4) rocks? the containers the petstore keeps betta's in are just jars with water, should i put rocks and plants in with Kwop Kilawtley or just leave him in it alone, cuz he looks empty and alone without anything else. 5) He just sits at the bottom most of the day, until i come into the room and sit with him, then he starts doign laps, but other ppl with betta's say theres sits in teh middle, not at the bottom, is this okay or is my fish sick?? sorry, i know its alot of questions i juist really love Kwop Kilawtley, so any answers are great, thank you to everyone. :D Happy Holidays Brittany haha, thanks, the name means Stay With me Forever :D 6) Would bigger rocks, or smaller gem-like rocks be better for Kwop Kilawtley's tank? becuase i have alot, so would a mix be good? or would one be better than the other? Resolved Question: What type of Algae Eaters can I put with my Betta? The bottom of my tank has rocks i got from the store. I noticed that there was gunk, maybe poo and food. I feed my Betta once every night just a little bit of flakes, that the guy at Petsmart recommended. The tank is a 10 gallon Top Fin® Aqua Scene Desktop Aquariums. I know that you can put other fish with Betta's. So if you can help that wold be great!!! Thanks alot!!! :)
